Start with the machine, not the photograph
Record the equipment manufacturer, model and full serial number from the identification plate. Add engine or assembly identification if the component belongs to a separate unit. Caterpillar’s guidance uses serial-number searches and parts diagrams to narrow selection; a model name alone is not a complete identification record.[1]
Keep every letter and suffix
Copy the complete reference from the installed part and its packaging. Photograph markings, connectors and mounting points without removing guards or dismantling equipment just for an enquiry. SKF explains that bearing prefixes and suffixes identify additional design features. A matching basic number or similar appearance therefore does not establish an exact replacement.[2]
Turn evidence into a clear request
Include the quantity, delivery country, city and postal code, plus any required documents. Describe modifications and uncertain or unreadable markings rather than guessing. Request confirmation against the relevant manufacturer information before ordering. For safety-critical selection or installation, involve a qualified technician; this checklist is not a maintenance procedure.
